Color Chords Video In Question

Video into my Color Chords not stabilizing. In from other source, such as Shape Changer works fine, but video in, whether RGB or Composite scrolls to the left and is distorted (not locking properly).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dennis

Could you say more about what your signal flow is like? How are you connecting your composite source to Color Chords, and how are you encoding the Color Chords output?

silly question perhaps but are you using some kind of adapter and going straight into the color chords?

workflow should be something like video into visual cortex RGB out from VC encoder to RGB inputs on color chords then RGB outputs from color chords to channel A or B on VC
then take your output from the visual cortex

Thanks for responding folks. I’m taking the RBG and composite output directly from the video device (camera, Andor 1) directly into Color Chords. Wednesdayayay suggested a patch that I haven’t tried but looks good. I’ll try it and get back to you. Thanks again.

As for why this doesn’t work to directly mix signals, here is a diagram showing the structure of a single scanline of composite video. This signal includes sync pulses, a color reference signal, and encodes the color information with a high-frequency subcarrier. So even if your input sources were perfectly in sync, summing them together would probably wind up garbling the signal, and doing any kind of processing of the signal like attenuation or mixing with other waveforms could interfere with the sync. Modules with input decoders (Visual Cortex, TBC2, Vidiot) can decode broadcast video signals (sometimes only luma from a composite source) to a patchable video signal.

CCBoling- thanks for the explanation. Very generous of you to do so. Doing LZX video synthesis for 2 years or so I still have much to learn.

Just curious, if you’re patching from a video source directly to a module without going through an input decoder, do you normally just use composite to 3.5mm adapters to interface with your modules? I haven’t seen any examples of that in action if you could share some! I’d be curious to see what a big patch entirely composed of those connections would look like.

well it would look unsyn’d as per the whole reason this thread was created

it is perfectly doable i suppose
I have several of these cables and love exploring using them for feedback from time to time
then you don’t get the issue with being unsyncd

but if you just go patching stuff in without decoding I don’t think you’ll find the results favorable at least in any kind of repeatable way

Sure, OP just said they’ve been doing vidsynth for two years so I thought maybe they’d have some cool workarounds or ways to purposely incorporate it!

have you tried plugging 3 different composite sources into the visual cortex instead of 1 component? lots of fun there in unsyncd land!
